Abstract

The search of alternatives for the development of chemical
processes which are clean, independent and the traditional
petrochemical´s potential substituent, has led to biotechnological
routes break through and be more considered.
Using the fermentation of a substrate, such as glycerol, a residue,
which has begun to increase its global availability, thanks to the
increasing production of biodiesel, possible pose a technically
and economically feasible process to obtain a product with high
added value such as 1,3 - propanediol (1,3-PD), which, because of its
remarkable properties, it has important applications, so promisingly
it can replace many raw materials and additives in the polymer
industry, paints, lubricants and others more.

The review conducted seeks give basics on this development´s
alternative, not only economic and environmental, but also
technological, as the bioconversion is rational tool for appropiate
and sustainable use of the energy and materials resources available
to man. At the same time, provides an overview of the current state
of the art and prospects of the bioprocess.
